Robert Finney

BiographyRobert first appears in the Plymouth records on 2 December 1639, when he was assigned a garden place in Webb's Field with his brother John Finney and nephew William Fallowell. Robert and his brother John each received grants of six acres on the brook coming from Fresh Lake. On 16 September 1641, Robert was on the list of those able to bear arms for the town of Plymouth in August 1643. He was constable in 1645 and was made a freeman of the colony on 7 June 1647. he was deputy to the General Court from Plymouth, 1657-60, 1661-64, 1669 and 1670-1672. Although Robert was frequently a juryman, he was fined on 4 October 1653 for failing to serve on a jury. He was granted lands at Taunton in 1662. On 1 June 1663 he was appointed with others to view the lands on the north side of Seconk and make a report to the court. Robert was granted 100 acres at Namassakett River, "if it may be had there", otherwise at Acuschenett, on 2 July 1667. In 1666 he was both selectman and surveyor of highways for the town of Plymouth. He was a deacon of the church there from 1669 until his death. He and Phebe had no children.1

MarriageHe married Phebe Ripley in Plymouth, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, on 1 September 1641.1 
WillHe made a will on 20 May 1668. 
DeathRobert died on 7 January 1688 in Plymouth, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, at age 79. 
ProbateRobert's will was probated in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, on 6 April 1688.

BirthRobert was born on 13 August 1656 in Barnstable, Barnstable County, Massachusetts.1,2 
BiographyAfter his Uncle Robert's death in 1687, he removed to Plymouth with his brother Joshua, for whom he was made guardian. 
WillHe made a will on 23 July 1690. "Robert Finney of the Town of Plymouth ... being ... bound for Canada to fight against the French and not knowing what may happen to me in the voyage" . Bequests were as follows:

To "my Brother Jonathan Finney" 20 shillings
To "my Brother Jeremiah Finney" 20 shillings
To " my Brother Joshua Finney" 20 shillings
To "my Sister Hannah Morton" 10 pounds
To "my Sister Elizabeth Finney" 5 pounds

"All my debts and Legacies being .... defray'd I Give and bequeath ... all my Estate both Real and personal . . . unto my Brother Josiah Finney and I do hereby appoint ... the said Josiah Finney ... Sole Executor".

The witnesses were Thomas Clarke and Eleazer Cushman, both of whom made oath to it on 17, Mar. 1690-1. 
DeathRobert died in 1690. 
ProbateRobert's will was probated in Plymouth, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, on 17 March 1691. An Inventory of the Estate of Robert Finney late ... of Plymouth deceased" was taken by Joseph Warren and Thomas Faunce on 6 Jan. 1690-1. No real estate was mentioned. Josiah Finney, executor, made oath to the inventory on March 17, 1690-1.
